Parents often advise their children against a career in the creative industry as they have the perception that there is “no work and no money” in this industry. These are but one of the myths about being an artist or “artistic”. According to a report, “Gauteng’s Creative Industries: An analysis” published in 2008, “the total direct and indirect contribution of the 11,320 firms and organizations comprising the creative economy is R33,3 billion per annum in turnover, creating employment for over 182,000 people. The audio-visual and the music sectors produce the most revenue per person employed.” And this is in Gauteng alone!
That is why the goals and functions of Visual Skills School as a private tertiary institution are unique. VSS follows a multi-disciplinary approach to embrace the dynamic nature of the visual media industry, drawing from appropriate art disciplines: Photography, graphic design and fine arts. The power of effective visual communication cannot be over emphasized. That is why VSS is a community where academic knowledge, as well as applied skills are sought and imparted in an environment which promotes freedom of thought and expression.
Photography is a core subject, where students learn not only the science and technique required, but also develop unique styles and reach levels of creativity previously beyond their scope.
Fine arts as a subject pursue idea- and creativity-generation and explore the mediums of drawing, painting and sculpture.
Graphic design is a core subject focusing on the needs of the visual media industry as well as those of the corporate world.
Communication as a subject is an overarching discipline with the primary goal of establishing a sound knowledge of communication processes, and secondary goal of preparing students for the workplace. Essential skills developed during this course are: verbal and visual communication skills; analytical skills; research skills; organizational skills; managerial skills; public relations skills and leadership skills.
Field trips, as part of the experiential learning mode that VSS promotes, spell fun and adventure.
VSS offers full time certificate and diploma courses, part time courses and short (one to two day courses). Furthermore, some of these courses can also be done correspondence.
